Historic gig, or nostalgic cash-in?

The one night-screening here of "Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live in Texas 1978" is a prelude to a DVD, Blu-Ray and CD release of the same name. Is this hype for a new/old product, or a welcome addition to the band's music library? Tell us how you see it -- and think before you cast the first stone.

It's been six years since the Rolling Stones' most recent San Diego performance took place at Petco Park. Rumors are mounting that rock's graying "bad boys" -- Graying "bad senior citizens" just doesn't have the same ring, does it? -- will mount a 50th anniversary-cum-farewell tour next year. Whether or not that tour materializes, the Stones are poised for a return to downtown San Diego, with concurrent "visits" to Mira Mesa and San Marcos.

In this case, though, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the other Stones will be appearing in a much younger incarnation -- 31 years younger, to be exact. They will also be performing for a much smaller San Diego audience than the 43,000 fans who nearly filled Petco on that memorable autumn night in 2005.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the "Rollling Stones: Some Girls Live in Texas 1978" concert film. It was shot in Fort Worth at the Will Rogers Memorial Center (there just has to be a good line about the pairing of the Stones and Will Rogers) as part of the band's "Some Girls" stadium tour. That tour, alas, apparently came no closer to San Diego than a pair of late July dates that year at Anaheim Stadium.

The nationwide, one night-only screening of "Some Girls Live in Texas" will take place Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.. The 85-minute concert film, which includes a recently shot five-minute interview with Mick Jagger, will be shown at three San Diego area theaters: UA Horton Plaza 14; Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18; and Edwards San Marcos Stadium 18. Tickets are $12.50 each and the film is rated PG. (Really? The Rolling Stones, in 1978, and it's PG? This would indicate there is absolutely no backstage footage, or -- if there is -- that it was heavily edited.)

Who shot and directed the film (if indeed there was a director) remains unclear. However, the original 16 millimeter film footage has been restored and the sound has been re-mixed and re-mastered from the original multi-track tapes by longtime Stones' colleague Bob Clearmountain .

What songs will be featured in the movie (which -- surprise, surprise! -- will be released on CD, DVD and Blu-Ray in November)? Here's the set list, which includes seven of the 10 songs from the Stones' classic 1978 "Some Girls" album:

1) "Let It Rock"

2) "All Down The Line"

3) "Honky Tonk Women"

4) "Star Star"

5) "When The Whip Comes Down"

6) "Beast Of Burden"

7) "Miss You"

8) "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"

9) "Shattered"

10) "Respectable"

11) "Far Away Eyes"

12) "Love In Vain"

13) "Tumbling Dice"

14) "Happy"

15) "Sweet Little Sixteen"

16) "Brown Sugar"

17) "Jumpin’ Jack Flash"
