40 Years Ago: The Rolling Stones’ ‘Star Star’ Gets Banned by the BBC...

40 Years Ago: The Rolling Stones’ ‘Star Star’ Gets Banned by the BBC.

 Mick Jagger

On Sept. 10, 1973, the Rolling Stones broke a 10-year history of clean, upstanding living when the BBC announced that ‘Star Star,’ a song off their then-new album ‘Goats Head Soup,’ was banned on account of its obscene lyrics.
The Chuck Berry-styled rocker deals with a woman for whom Mick Jagger is just another celebrity notch on her presumably rhinestone-studded belt. Written as “Starf—er,’ its name was changed at the behest of Atlantic Records chief Ahmet Ertegun. However, the chorus, which features Jagger repeatedly calling the woman by the slur in the original title.
As if the lyrics weren’t direct enough, Jagger drove the point home in concert. During the performance of that song on the 1975 tour, a giant inflatable penis would appear on the stage, which Jagger would ride.
Another source of controversy was in the final verse, where Jagger hears rumors about her sexual activity with actor Steve McQueen, and that she had her eyes set on Hollywood legend John Wayne. Perhaps the latter was a bit too iconoclastic. In the live version from 1978 embedded below, Jagger changes the lyric to take a shot at a fellow rocker. “Jimmy Page / Was quite a rage / I could not see the reason why.”
Despite being banned by the BBC, it was nonetheless released as a single in more permissive European countries like Germany and France.

Ronnie Wood to be grandfather again.!!

Ronnie Wood to be grandfather again

Ronnie Wood is set to become a grandfather for the eighth time.
The 66-year-old Rolling Stones rocker's daughter Leah - one of his children with ex-wife Jo Wood - has revealed she is expecting her second child with her financier husband Jack MacDonald.
Leah told the new UK issue of HELLO! magazine: ''We took dad out to lunch and broke the news that he's going to be a grandpa again.''
The 35-year-old blonde - who lives with mother Jo in north London - already has a four-year-old daughter, Maggie.
Her second child with Jack is due on their daughter's fifth birthday in May.
Leah revealed: ''Dad is really good with Maggie. We don't see him often but when we do, he'll pick Maggie up and give her kisses and play with her.
''She will see him on TV sometimes and say, 'Ah, it's Grandpa.'
''But she's obsessed with Keith Richards. He'll go up to her and he'll kiss her hand and she's like, 'Oooh!'
Guitarist Ronnie and ex-wife Jo divorced in 2009 after he left her for young waitress Ekaterina Ivanova. He is now married to theatre producer Sally Humphreys, while Jo remains single.
The former couple, who remain close, are also parents to Tyrone, 30, Jo's son Jamie, 39, and Ronnie's son Jesse, 37.

Is Mick Jagger Going To Make The Coolest Great-Grandfather Ever?

Mick Jagger is to become a great grandfather after his daughter Jade Jagger confirmed her 21-year-old daughter Assisi is due to give birth in early 2014.
"I think making Mick a grandfather obviously had a big impact whereas, now, making him a great-grandfather is no longer particularly fascinating," Jade Jagger told the paper The Sunday Times.
"My dad has always been great at keeping the family together and having those important moments - Christmas parties, his birthday. We'll be spending New Year's Eve together, nearly all of us [in Mustique]."
Jagger has seven children from four relationships with Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall and Luciana Gimenez. He has four grandchildren in total.
Every member of The Rolling Stones - still one of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world - is a grandfather.
Assisi told Hello magazine, "The women in our family just tend to have children young, it runs in the genes.I grew up quite quickly and wouldn't have considered having a child if I was doing what my friends are doing at this stage, messing around.I don't drink, I don't smoke and I'm very settled."
The Stones recently released a DVD of their summer performances at London's Hyde Park, titled 'Sweet Summer Sun - Hyde Park Live.' Read more about the release here.

Rolling Stones Bassist Says Band Has Many Unreleased Songs.!

The greatest-hits album the Rolling Stones released last year, ‘Grrr!,’ may have contained only two new songs, but there are plenty more where they came from. In a recent interview, bassist Darryl Jones says that those two tracks are just the tip of the iceberg.
“[W]hen I think back about the recording that I have done with them over the years, there is still a lot of stuff that no one has heard,” he told Noise11.com. “There is still a lot of very good stuff — ‘A Bigger Bang’ sessions going right back to ‘Voodoo Lounge,’ which was my first record. Everything that we recorded did not make it onto that record. There are some other really great pieces there.”
Jones — who joined the Stones in 1994 after having played with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Sting – isn’t sure if the band will add more dates anytime soon, but he did say that he’s hearing “rumblings, like there always are.” But he was very satisfied with the way the group sounded on its 50 and Counting tour, and hopes it will continue.
“I feel like the band is playing really great right now,” he said. “I felt we had the momentum of the previous year. I think it’s coming together. I don’t think we’ve sounded bad since I’ve been in the band, which is actually more than 20 years since I’ve been with the band. Right now, it just gels. At Hyde Park we were really pretty good, I think.”

The Rolling Stones spent 2013 celebrating their 50th anniversary on the road, and it looks like they plan to continue their globetrotting streak with new dates in 2014.
At the very least, the Stones have confirmed that they’ll head to Australia, where they’ll christen the recently renovated Adelaide Oval with a gala performance on March 22. The venue’s re-opening is a banner event for the city, and one whose importance necessitated a suitably major headlining act; as promoter Tony Cochrane put it in a press release announcing the show, “Adelaide Oval and the Government asked me to come up with the biggest night I could think of for this one off event to re-open Adelaide Oval — that made it easy — it had to be the Rolling Stones and it had to be on a massive scale!”
“It’s great to be invited to Adelaide to open the historic Oval,” said Mick Jagger. “We’re really looking forward to doing this gig. It will be the first time we’ve been to Adelaide in nearly 20 years, so see you there!” His enthusiasm was matched by Keith Richards, who added, “Hi everyone down in Adelaide, it’s been a while since we were in your backyard … See you on March 22 when we’ll take over your new stadium and make it our own, look forward to it.”
In keeping with recent Stones tradition, the Adelaide gig will also feature an appearance from former member Mick Taylor, as well as a no-expenses-spared set design that will reportedly include a huge ramp extending directly into the audience. And as Vintage Vinyl News reports, more Australian dates are expected to follow, with a Melbourne show rumored to be next on the schedule.
The pre-sale for tickets to the March 22 concert, which start at $79, is scheduled to begin on Nov. 21. For more information, visit the Adelaide Oval website.
