Rolling Stones app for 'GRRR!' is part of ambitious augmented-reality campaign
The Rolling Stones teased the announcement for their 50th anniversary greatest-hits collection, "GRRR!," with a uView app. That app is part of an ambitious augmented-reality campaign in which people can still use the app to pre-order "GRRR!" and watch the illustrated King Kong-like gorilla that is featured on the cover of "GRRR!" visit landmarks around the world. The cover of "GRRR!" was illustrated by Walton Ford.
Android and iOS have the app for free at their respective websites.
According to Pocket-lint: "No less that 50 cities (one for each year the band has been around) and more than 3,000 locations are involved, including the Houses of Parliament in London, the Skytree in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House and, of course, the Empire State Building in New York. Pocket-lint has been told that if, using free application uView, you point your iPhone or Android device at one of the tagged buildings, a virtual 3D animated gorilla will appear ...
"A competition to win 'fantastic prizes' - including two 'very special prizes' - has also opened. Fans are encouraged to take pictures of the Gorilla animations in action around the world and share them via Twitter, including the hashtag #GRRR!, or send them to grrr@rollingstones.com via email. They will be posted on to an interactive photo wall on the band's official website and the top 50 will walk away with the swag."
As previously reported, the Rolling Stones have recorded two new songs ("Gloom and Doom" and "One Last Shot") for "GRRR!," which will be released in the U.S. and Canada on November 13, 2012, and in other countries on November 12, 2012. The complete track listing for "GRRR!" is to be announced, but a statement on the official Rolling Stones website says that the collection will have songs spanning all 50 years of the Rolling Stones' career. The announced songs so far, besides "Gloom and Doom" and "One Last Shot," are “Come On,” “The Last Time,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Brown Sugar,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Miss You” and “Start Me Up.”
ABKCO and Universal Music, which have teamed up to release "GRRR!," say that the augmented-reality campaign for "GRRR!" is the largest of its kind.
