Ronnie Wood and revamped Faces sued over cancelled London concert
Ronnie Wood and the rest of the revamped lineup of the Faces
are being sued for more than £97,000 (or $155,000) by British
concert-promotion company Peter Conway Promotions, which claims breach
of contract because the band cancelled a festival gig in London to play a
higher-paying show in Japan instead.
The Sun reports that the lawsuit claims the Faces had backed out of a deal for the band to headline the Greenwich Summer Sessions in 2011. The festival's lineup also included Squeeze, Mark Ronson and Status Quo. Peter Conway Promotions alleges that the Faces cancelled their Greenwich Summer Sessions gig weeks before the event because the band had accepted an offer to perform instead at the 2011 Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. According to the lawsuit, the Faces would have been paid $75,000 for the Greenwich Summer Sessions show, while the band received $500,000 to play at the Fuji Rock Festival. Peter Conway Promotions claims that because of the Faces' cancellation, the company lost thousands in sales for tickets, merchandise, food and drinks.
Wood is one of the original members of the Faces, the band he was in before he joined the Rolling Stones in the mid-1970s. The Faces broke up in 1975, but there have been occasional reunions of the band on stage in subsequent years.
A revamped lineup of the Faces toured in 2010 and 2011. The new lineup consists of original members Wood on guitar, Kenney Jones on drums, Ian McLagan on keyboards, plus new Faces members Mick Hucknall (of Simply Red fame) on lead vocals and former Sex Pistol member Glen Matlock on bass. Ronnie Lane, the original bass player of the Faces, died of multiple sclerosis in 1997. Rod Stewart, the original lead singer of the Faces, declined to be a part of the Faces reunion tours.
Stewart was also absent when the Faces were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 14, 2012. Stewart issued a statement saying that he had to cancel his appearance at the show because he was sick with the flu. Hucknall filled in for Stewart when the Faces performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Wood is the only member of the Rolling Stones who has two inductions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was first inducted with the Rolling Stones in 1989.
Jones and Stewart also have two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions. Jones was inducted with the Who in 1990, while Stewart was inducted as a solo artist in 1994.
So far, there has been no comment from the Faces about the lawsuit, which will most likely be settled out of court.
