Jackson Browne, Ian Hunter And Others Star In Carnegie Hall Tribute To The Rolling Stones
New York’s Carnegie Hall may seem like a strange place for a tribute to those scrappy hoodlums known as the Rolling Stones, but the prestigious venue will get its rocks off on March 13 with ‘The Music of the Rolling Stones.’ Classic artists like Jackson Browne, Ian Hunter & The Rant Band and Art Garfunkel will join 18 other acts to perform all 21 songs on the Stones’ compilation, ‘Hot Rocks: 1964-1971′ album.
The concert, a benefit for various music and arts education programs, is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of one of the most durable greatest hits albums in all of rock music. The versatility of the Stones’ early catalog will be on display, via performers from across the musical spectrum. Joining those classic names on the bill include blues great Taj Mahal, songwriter Marc Cohn, Ronnie Spector, Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes and indie superstars the Mountain Goats.
Who will play which song remains largely a mystery, but Rosanne Cash recently hinted via Twitter a few weeks ago that she and John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful will perform ‘Gimme Shelter,’ and songwriter Steve Earle told Billboard that he chose ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ because it was the first song he ever learned how to play on guitar.
However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Marianne Faithful reprised her hit version of ‘As Tears Go By,’ and ‘Ruby Tuesday’ was practically tailor-made for likable folkie dude Glen Hansard. Dare we even suggest that the great African American bluegrass group Carolina Chocolate Drops give ‘Brown Sugar’ a shot?
