Rolling Stones make unpredictable song choices at 12-12-12 concert
On December 12, 2012, the Rolling Stones performed two songs at 12-12-12:
The Concert for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The all-star event was a fundraiser to benefit victims of Hurricane
Sandy. Rather than being predictable by doing songs like "Gimme Shelter"
and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction)," the Rolling Stones
instead kept things at a unpredictable pace by starting off with one of
their lesser-known singles, "You Got Me Rocking" (from 1994's '"Voodoo
Lounge" album), which was followed by the Stones' 1968 classic "Jumpin'
Jack Flash."
Even with just two songs, Rolling Stones (lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Ronnie Wood) injected plenty of lively energy to the event.
Jagger quipped on stage: "This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden. But I’ve got to say, if it rains in London, you’ve got to come and help us, OK?"
As previously reported, the Rolling Stones were announced as part of a star-studded lineup of entertainers who participated in the event. There was a lot of speculation and false rumors about what part of the show that the Rolling Stones would perform. The Rolling Stones ended up performing in the middle of the concert, not in the beginning or the end.
Other performers for the 12-12-12 event were The Who, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Kanye West, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Michael Stipe, Roger Waters, Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton and Bon Jovi. Toward the end of the show, McCartney sang lead vocals with the surviving members of Nirvana. This reunion had been widely reported in advance, so it wasn't much of a surprise.
Presenters included Susan Sarandon, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, Kristen Stewart, Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Brian Williams, Jessica Chastain, Chelsea Clinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Seth Meyers, Blake Lively, Jon Stewart, Katie Holmes, Steve Buscemi and Stephen Colbert.
Many of the event's organizers, including Harvey Weinstein and John Sykes, are the same people who organized the Concert for New York City, the October 2001 concert that took place to benefit survivors of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Jagger and Richards were among the performers at the all-star event.
Numerous TV networks, websites and radio stations carried the concert. A select number of movie cinemas in the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy had simulcasts of the concerts, with free tickets distributed to those who saw the event in cinemas.
Columbia Records is releasing a "12-12-12" soundtrack album with live tracks (to be announced) from the concert. The album is being planned for release as a digital download on December 18, 2012, and as a CD on a date to be announced.
