No Rolling Stones party for 'Some Girls' reissue; fans wonder about band reunion
Many Rolling Stones fans have wondered when all four current members of the band (lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Ronnie Wood) will reunite in public again. Some people thought that their next public reunion might be at a record-release party for the 2011 reissue of “Some Girls” (the band’s critically acclaimed hit album that was originally released in 1978), but sources have told me that the Rolling Stones are not having a party for the “Some Girls” reissue.
As previously reported, the 2011 remastered reissue of “Some Girls” is set for a worldwide release on November 21 by Universal Music. The reissue has bonus tracks that include previously unreleased songs that were written in the late 1970s. In addition, the concert film "Some Girls Live in Texas '78" will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 21, 2011.
In September 2011, the Rolling Stones were seen having a private band meeting at a London office building. Jagger later said in interviews that the band discussed what to do for the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary in 2012, but no decision has been made yet.
In May 2010, Jagger, Richards and Watts attended a party in New York City to celebrate the 2010 reissue of the Rolling Stones’ 1972 album “Exile on Main Street” and the 2010 release of the documentary film “Stones in Exile,” which is about the making of the “Exile” album. Wood did not attend the event since he joined the band in the mid-1970s, after “Exile on Main Street” was recorded and released.
The last period of time that all four current members of the Rolling Stones gathered for a public event were when they were promoting the 2008 Rolling Stones concert film “Shine a Light,” directed by Oscar winner Martin Scorsese. The Rolling Stones attended “Shine a Light” premieres and media events in Berlin (in February 2008), in New York City (in March 2008), and in London (in April 2008).
In their most recent interviews, Richards and Wood have made it clear that they want the Rolling Stones to tour again. Watts has remained somewhat neutral by saying in his most recent interviews that Richards and Wood would be the band members most likely to want to initiate the next Rolling Stones tour. Jagger has yet to say in recent interviews that he wants to tour with the Rolling Stones again. When Jagger is asked about when the next Stones tour might be, his response has usually been that the band has “no plans” to tour.
The most recent Rolling Stones tour (for the 2005 album “A Bigger Bang”) lasted from 2005 to 2007.
Fans have speculated that there is still tension between Jagger and Richards over the insults about Jagger in Richards’ best-selling, award-winning memoir “Life,” which was published in October 2010.
But even before the book was published, Jagger said in interviews that, as a lead singer, he has to exert the most physical energy on tour, compared to the other band members, so any decision for the Rolling Stones to tour again will depend on whether Jagger wants to go through the rigors of touring again.
Meanwhile, Jagger’s band SuperHeavy (whose other members are Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman) also has no plans to tour. SuperHeavy filmed a music video for “Miracle Worker” on a set that was not open to the public. Although SuperHeavy performed/ lip synched in front of an audience of extras for the music video, the band has not done any live performances in public together. Superheavy’s eponymous debut album, released in September 2011, was a hit in some countries (such as Germany, Austria and the Netherlands) and a flop in others (such as the United States and the United Kingdom).
Although there have been rumors that the Rolling Stones or SuperHeavy would perform at the 2012 Olympics in London, those rumors are false.
There has been much speculation that the Rolling Stones might gather for some kind of public event for their 50th anniversary celebration. Wood has told the media that he thinks the Stones owe it to fans to do at least one live performance for the anniversary. Until there is any news of such an event, fans will continue to wonder when the band will reunite in public.
