Rolling Stones album artwork for Let it Bleed set to fetch £40,000 at auction
The original artwork for the cover of the Rolling Stones’ Let it Bleed album is coming up for sale at auction this month.
Rock and pop memorabilia seems to be bucking the trend when it comes to current economic woes and demand for unique items of leading bands and artistes such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Who and Jimi Hendrix just keeps on growing and growing.
The Let it Bleed cover has been described as one of the greatest of all time and was one of 10 chosen by the Royal Mail for inclusion in its set of classic album cover stamps issued last year.
It is also regarded by many critics as the best Stones album and in 2005 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
Recorded at Olympic Studios in South-West London, it was released in Britain on December 5, 1969 and went to No 1 in the album chart.
It was also the last album that Stones founder Brian Jones worked on before his death that summer.
Curiously, the cover design includes a cake that was created by the young Delia Smith.
The Let it Bleed artwork is a highlight of Bonhams next Entertainment Memorabilia auction on December 15 in Knightsbridge, West London.
It is expected to sell for between £30,000 and £40,000.
The sale also includes other gems such an autographed black andgold label pressing of The Beatles’ debut album Please Please Me, which has a pre-sale estimate of £8,000 to £10,000.
and a Jimi Hendrix jacket/cape should fetch £3,000 to £5,000.
“IT is really exciting to be able to offer the artwork for this iconic design,” said a Bonhams spokesman. “We expect it to attract a lot of interest from collectors of pop memorabilia and from Rolling Stones all over the world.”
