Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is set to reprise his cameo role as Captain Teague, the father of Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp), in Walt Disney Pictures' "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." According to King FM, Richards will begin filming his role in the movie in Queensland, Australia, in February 2015.
Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are the directors of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," which is scheduled for a U.S. release on July 7, 2017. (The movie's release date in other countries might vary.) The plot of the movie is being kept secret for now. Most of the film's cast have not yet been officially announced, but Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Brenton Thwaites are reportedly among the other co-stars of the movie.
Richards was previously in 2011's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth movie in the series. He first appeared as Captain Teague in 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third film in the series.
Depp has said in many interviews that Richards is the main inspiration for how he played his Capt. Jack Sparrow character. Depp and Richards are also good friends in real life. The actor directed a documentary about Richards back in 2010, but the movie's title and release date have not been announced.
In an April 2011 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Depp said of Richards reprising the role of Captain Teague: "We needed his character back. That was one of the things I felt very strongly about."
Richards told the Los Angeles Times in a May 2011 interview: “I never expected to work for the Disney organization for a while. I’m still shocked, but, hey, it’s all good fun ... This is so different than what I usually do, and I love to see how's it made, you know, and this is one 3-D with the big cameras and all, and I'm interested in that, and I get to see the latest techniques. And I don't have to really do a lot of work. We did it in London at Pinewood Studios, and it was the usual thing. You get there early, and you wait around a long time. The makeup takes a long time; it's an incredible amount of makeup, and sometimes you're sitting there next to a guy who's getting scales put on. "Hey, how you doin'?" It's a lot of preparation to do something that will be short, but it's amazing stuff, as you expect.
“Not everybody that likes pirate movies necessarily likes rock ‘n’ roll, right, and so this all gives me another chance to communicate with different people. Now everywhere there’s all these young people who know me as Capt. Teague, not as Keith Richards. ‘That’s Jack Sparrow’s dad!’ And that’s cool, man.”
