Presley's first guitarist passed away at his home in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday (28Jun16), aged 84 after months of ill health. He was best known for his work with Elvis and their collaborations on hits such as Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede, plus their band The Blue Moon Boys, which they formed in 1954 with bassist Bill Black.
Following news of Moore's death, many musicians took to social media to mourn him, including Stones guitarist Richards, who has vocally praised him over the years.
He shared a picture of himself standing with Moore in Memphis, Tennessee in 2005 on Facebook and wrote in the caption, "It is with great sadness we say goodbye to Scotty Moore, my first inspiration. The work he performed on those incredible early Elvis tracks stays with me forever. Farewell old friend."
Richards attended the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the year Scotty was inducted, to accept the honour on his behalf as the musician was sick. The rocker had also previously said, “Everyone else wanted to be Elvis... I wanted to be Scotty."
The Rolling Stones star wasn't the only one to mourn Moore on social media - Rocker Slash wrote on Instagram, "RIP Scotty Moore. Often underappreciated. But one of the most influential guitarists in RnR (rock 'n' roll)," while Bryan Adams also took to the site to add, "RIP ScottyMoore. I had the privilege of playing with Scotty in 1994 at the Elvis 'Now or Never' tribute. What a legend."
Led Zeppelin star Jimmy Page tweeted, "Rest in Peace, Scotty Moore. A true icon of the electric guitar," while Billy Idol added, "Not many guitarists in R&R were as original & as inventive as Scotty Moore RIP," and Billy Ray Cyrus posted, "RIP Scotty Moore. You will be deeply missed. One thing's for sure... the King is rockin in Heaven tonight!!"
