Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart and drummer Kenney Jones (the three surviving original members of the Faces)
reunited for a Rock'n'Horsepower charity concert at Hurtwood Park Polo
Club in Ewhurst, Surrey, England, on Sept. 5, 2015. As previously
reported, Jones and Stewart were the chief organizers of the annual
charity concert, which was a benefit for Prostate Cancer U.K.
During the nearly one-hour performance, the trio (backed by several unknown musicians) did seven songs, mostly cover tunes, such as Muddy Waters' “I Feel So Good,” Etta James' “I’d Rather Go Blind,” the Temptations’ “(I Know) I’m Losing You” and Chuck Berry's “Sweet Little Rock and Roller.” The band also did the Faces songs “You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything” “Ooh La La” and "Stay With Me," the Faces' biggest hit.
Stewart later tweeted: "A perfect rockin' evening with my mates @RonnieWood @KenneyJones! #FacesReunion." Wood tweeted: "Had me a real good time tonight. THANK YOU!" Jones tweeted: "What an amazing night last night was! The biggest thank you to everyone involved."
Here is the entire set list, in the order that the songs were played:
I Feel So Good
You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything
Ooh La La
I'd Rather Go Blind
(I Know) I'm Losing You
Stay With Me
Sweet Little Rock and Roller
The Faces reunion performance got mixed-to-positive reviews. Bruce Orwall of the Wall Street Journal commented: "It took awhile for Saturday night’s show to leap back in time. Stewart warned that the band had spent more time debating what to wear than rehearsing; he joked that he was going to wear a sequined jacket until Wood showed up in one of his own. Instead he wore trousers with a yellow marching-band stripe up the seam that matched the crest on his cream blazer. He and Wood hugged and mugged with their dueling rooster cuts, still intact four decades later ... Wood’s sobriety has a big upside, though: he is playing better these days than he has in years. And that eventually coaxed out some old magic."
The Faces were formed in 1969 with original members Stewart, Wood, Jones, bassist Ronnie Lane and keyboardist Ian McLagan. The Faces disbanded in 1975 when guitarist Wood joined the Rolling Stones. There have been very few reunion performances with Stewart and the rest of the band's original members since the breakup. Lane died of multiple sclerosis in 1997, at the age of 51. Stewart, Wood and Jones had not performed together on stage since 1993, when Stewart received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Brit Awards.
On Dec. 3, 2014, McLagan died in a hospital in Austin, Texas, after having a stroke the day before his death, according to the Associated Press. He was 69. McLagan was best known for being the keyboardist for the Faces (the band that also included future Rolling Stones guitarist Wood) and the Small Faces. McLagan also collaborated with the Rolling Stones; he played on the Rolling Stones' 1978 album "Some Girls" and was a keyboardist on the Stones' 1981-1982 tour.
McLagan, Wood and other original members of the Faces were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, along with the Small Faces. Stewart abruptly cancelled his appearance at the show due to an "illness." (Stewart claimed he had the flu.)
In 2010 and 2011, a revamped lineup of the Faces did tours that mostly went to Europe. McLagan, Wood and Jones were the original members of the revamped lineup of the Faces that included lead singer Mick Hucknall (who stepped in for Stewart, who has declined to do Faces reunion tours) and bassist Glen Matlock.
