The Rolling Stones' '81 Hampton Coliseum show opens new series from band's archives...

It's great how bands are digging into the past for shows that were once available only on bootlegs, like the just released Rolling Stones' "From the Vault: Hampton Coliseum - Live in 1981" along with “From the Vault – L.A. Forum – Live in 1975,” which comes out on Nov. 18, both from Eagle Vision. The two releases are the beginning of a new “From the Vault” series that will make vintage Stones live concerts available.

The Hampton Coliseum show was actually first released in 2012 as a digital download, but now is available on both CD and DVD. The DVD is the film of a concert originally shown on pay-per-view. It begins with a promo of what radio stations the audio of the concert can be heard on. In typical Stones fashion, though, the stations are tattooed on a girl's naked body.
The show was recorded on Dec. 18 on Keith Richards' 38th birthday, which Mick Jagger honored by singing “Happy Birthday” to Keith. Besides the usual classics, the set also contains “Going to A Go-Go,” “She's So Cold,” “When the Whip Comes Down,” “Let's Spend the Night Together” and “Just My Imagination.”
Things get a little scary during the final number, “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.” As the balloons fall for the finale, a fan runs onto the stage and heads straight for Richards, who then deftly takes the guitar off his shoulder without losing his composure and swings it at the guy, who is then taken away by security almost without missing a note.
But this is a very good show, a much better show than "Some Girls: Live in Texas 1978," which was a sloppy mess. The Stones are in great form with Mick Jagger bounding all over the stage and Richards and Ron Wood trading some nice licks. Charlie and Bill Wyman sound great, too. And considering the age of the film, it looks very good, especially on Blu-ray. You can see a clip of "Waiting On a Friend" from the DVD on this page.
“From the Vault – L.A. Forum – Live in 1975,” which comes out next week, is taken from a show on Ronnie Wood's first tour with the band. It includes “Gimme Shelter,” “”You Can't Always Get What You Want,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Star Star,” “Brown Sugar,” “Midnight Rambler” and “Jumpin' Jack Flash” among the songs in the set.
