Keith Richards planned to attend George Jones farewell concert
George Jones was set to play his final show in Nashville Nov. 22 at Bridgestone Arena. The concert was to be the culmination of the 81-year-old’s farewell tour The Grand Tour, named after one of his most popular songs. The list of artists set to participate was dozens deep and included Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Charlie Daniels Band, Dierks Bentley, Cyndi Lauper and Billy Ray Cyrus.
The concert sold out of its 15,000 tickets quickly and was shaping up to be one of Nashville’s biggest events of the year.
After the king of country music’s passing on Friday morning at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the fate of that concert is undecided.
But even today, it looks as if Jones had even bigger plans for the evening than the public realized. A hand-written letter from The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards was provided to The Tennessean in which the famed guitarist said he would be at the show “by hook or by crook.”
In another letter, President George H.W. Bush wrote that Jones’ invitation meant a lot to them but that he and Barbara had to decline for health reasons.
“But you can bet the Bushes will be there in spirit on Nov. 22, 2013,” he wrote.

Rolling Stones reach back into catalog for setlist at L.A. club show...
The Rolling Stones dug deep into their catalog and pulled out a few surprises for a club show ahead of their 50 And Counting tour Saturday at the Echoplex in Los Angeles.
The show, which was blogged with the setlist and some of Mick Jagger's comments as it happened on the Stones' @rollingstones Twitter account, opened with “You Got Me Rockin',” then moved to “Respectable,” after which Jagger was said to joke, "Welcome everybody to Echo Park. The neighborhood that's always coming up. Glad you're here to welcome an up and coming band"
Next came “She So Cold,” and “Live With Me.” Accoridng to Twitter, Jagger then said, “This one we haven't done in a while, and the band roared into “Street Fighting Man.”
Jagger said, “We're gonna do a ballad now, a kinda soul ballad anyway,” and the band did “That's How Strong My Love Is.”
They then did what Jagger introduced as “a real old song” and sang “Little Queenie,” then another Motown song, “Just My Imagination.”
Next was “Miss You,” after which Jagger said, We're having a great time up here! We're going to reintroduce a friend of ours up here. We're going to do a blues number by Robert Johnson.” The song was “Love In Vain,” and the friend was Mick Taylor, who also played on the next number, to “speed things up a bit,” as Jagger introduced “Midnight Rambler.”
Going into the home stretch, the band began with “Start Me Up,” then finished off with “Brown Sugar” and “Jumpin' Jack Flash.”
To end the show, Jagger told the crowd, “Thank you very much, everybody. You've given us hope, peace and understanding. Goodnight.”
The Stones announced the show Saturday morning and it sold out right away.
